What can one do with a short train on a formal dress so to not get dirty?

formal dress
Cyn B asked:

I want to wear a dress that has a sweeping length or chapel length (sorry, it’s short, but I didn’t measure it or anything) to a formal event. I think it’s too short to bustle, but since it is white, it’d get dirty on the way to the event if it were left down. Other than holding it – and maybe showing the tulle under the dress, what do you recommend?

Most wedding gowns with trains, for instance, have a tiny little button sewn on the back of the dress…and a loop on the train….in order to put it up just for this purpose.

Have you considered spraying on some scotchgaurd? I would first ask about this problem and this possible solution, with someone who sells fine dresses.

If there is not a way to raise the train, sew a “hook and eye” (available at any store that sells fabric or sewing supplies) onto the dress. You can drape the train beautifully and literally “hook” it into place.

I would hate to have to worry about getting a train dirty, rather than enjoying the special occasion that calls for formal dress. Consider removing the train, cutting the train, or wearing a different dress. Life is too short to worry about dirty trains.
